Day 9 – Vienna – Hofburg Palace, Art History Museum & Imperial Treasury

December 23, 2016January 8, 2017 By admin

Hofburg Palace is the former imperial palace in the centre of Vienna.  Part of the palace forms the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria.

The outside of the palace is quite impressive.

In front of the entryway of the palace complex Roman walls have been excavated.

We also went inside the palace to see the Silver Collection, all the many plates, cups etc that have been used over time. Very impressive! Although I wouldn’t want to have to polish all those items!

We also went into the Sisi Museum which was part of the Imperial Apartments (couldn’t take photos in there of course!) which shows the life of Empress Elizabeth who was assassinated in 1898.

We went into the Art History Museum, which is housed in part of the palace complex. The inside of the Museum is so beautiful!

This museum had a lot of items from the Egyptian, Greek & Roman periods, but it also had collections of historical musical instruments and arms and armour which was quite fascinating.

Our next stop was the Imperial Treasury. Lots of beautiful jewels and heavily embroidered garments. Mostly embroidered in gold of course!

Cousin Elfi and her husband Hans provided us with more transport for the journey to Krems in their one year old Jaguar. Introductions and translations start in earnest now and Peter and I are put to the test. To simplify we are now calling Jonh Hans, which is short for Johann or John in English  (are you confused now?). Luckily our German is understood more.

Before we reach Peter and Silvia’s second home away from home with our Austrian family we stop off at Florian’s place (Karin’s eldest son). He built himself an outdoor rotisserie where he was entertaining his friends with roasted chicken and gluhwein. It was finger licking good and the fire place kept was toasty and warm. We were greeted with hugs and kisses from Tante Anni and Onkel Franz and a much welcomed home made vegi soup. Gute Nacht
