Today we were able to get up a bit later and had the whole day ahead of us as we had the Northern Lights tour booked for 8pm.
Silvia, John & I went to the laundromat. What an experience! Luckily we got there early as there was limited washing machines and dryers. We met two other Aussie couples there also doing their laundry.
One couple showed me photos of the Northern Lights that had appeared on NYE at around 10pm. Unfortunately we had missed that as we were still asleep!
After we did the laundry we wondered around town looking at the street art.
Do you know that Iceland is really really expensive? We asked our tour guide to try & get us into a restaurant for dinner on NYE. He did get us in and it was going to cost 19,000 krona per person. Sounds cheap right? When converted to Aussie $$$ it equated to about $249 per person! Wow! Obviously we declined dinner.
Do you know that Icelanders believe in elves and trolls? They don’t have one Father Christmas like we do, they have 13 Father Christmases which I think are actually trolls. They call them the Yule Lads. Some of the characters are Spoon-Licker; Door Slammer; Candle Begger, anyway you get the drift.
Icelandic children place a shoe in their bedroom window each evening in the 13 days before Christmas. Every night one Yuletide lad visits, leaving sweets and small gifts or rotting potatoes, depending on how that particular child has behaved on the preceding day. Each Yuletide lad has a specific idiosyncrasy and will therefore behave in a particular manner.
At 6:30pm we checked the Tour’s website and unfortunately they cancelled the Northern Lights tour due to the weather conditions not being good. Bummer!
Peter decided we should all get up at 2am and go for a walk to see if we could see the Northern Light, but it was not to be. Around 4:20am we were on the bus heading back to the airport. We witnessed a beautiful sunrise as we flew out, but still no lights 🙁
