Day 36 – Santorini – Peter & Kylie – Megalochori, Prehistoric Akrotiri, Red Beach & Faros

January 19, 2017January 23, 2017 By admin

After a leisurely breakfast we headed off in the car to visit the town of Megalochori, which is 800 years old.

We wondered through the streets, although there was nothing open.  These towns are like another world with their little ‘Hobbit’ houses.  There are some which have been abandoned.

We then set off to find the prehistoric site of Akrotiri. After some wrong turns we ended up stopping at a bakery.

And what a bakery! I wanted to take one of everything! Peter had a chocolate mousse cake which was very decadent! I tried an ice cream cone. Both were very good.

Stopping at the bakery was great because we discovered the sign for the turn off for Akrotiri. We drop into the town & parked and walked up to old Venetian fort. We still had to find the Akrotiri site.

We managed to find it eventually and entered the site. I was amazed at how extensive the excavations were! And it’s all under cover.

A short drive from Akrotiri was the red beach.  We braved the track which was officially closed due to falling rocks to get a view from above.

We then drove to Faros where the lighthouse is located at the very southwest tip of the island. We couldn’t go into the lighthouse but we took some photos.

Afterwards we stopped at a little seafood restaurant although we didn’t have any seafood as we had eaten it the night before. We had the most delicious tzatziki with bread and some Mediterranean fried meatballs. We ended up with a dog sitting there watching us eating, I ended up feeding the dog! Couldn’t help myself! So cute.

We were so full from lunch we decided to skip dinner and just relax.
