Today we got up early and had breakfast then headed out to see the Ancient Agora, which was within walking distance of our hotel.
We wondered around the ancient ruins enjoying the sun and after coming out of there stumbled upon Hadrian’s Library.
We had purchased a special pass for the day that included all the ancient sites for a set price.
From Hadrian’s Library we wondered through the markets at Monastiraki, looking at all the wares and souvenir shops. Sunday is market day and everyone rocks up to sell their bric-a-brac.
From there we walked through The Plaka, a historic district of Athens with lovely shops towards the Acropolis.
It was a glorious day! The sun was out and it was about 15 degrees. We soaked up the heat and the sun after being in the cold for so long.
The top of the Acropolis was wonderful and we were walking around in our t-shirts, enjoying the sites.
We then went to see Hadrian’s Arch and the Temple of Olympian Zeus which still has a number of columns standing.
From there we walked to the Panathenaic Stadium. We didn’t go in though, just looked at it from the outside.
Apparently the stadium was built on the site of a simple racecourse by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos (Lycurgus) c. 330 BC, primarily for the Panathenaic Games, so something has been standing there for a really long time!
We wondered back to our hotel and went and had another wonderful dinner in a 40’s themed restaurant (the walls were covered in old signs from the era). The Greeks are very generous people and constantly give you ‘on the house’ food which is really lovely. We are definitely coming back to Greece.
