Today we slept in a bit as we didn’t have much on. We went and had breakfast and I must say I wasn’t overly impressed with the selection. It wasn’t the best spread we had had so far.
We had tickets to go on the train to Gornergrat where we were to find an igloo to have a cheese fondue for lunch.
When we got to the train station and showed the woman our tickets she asked us where our sticks and ski boots were as apparently it was a 20min walk through snow to the igloo from the station. Of course none of this information was on the ticket, so who knew!
We asked the lady if there was a ski rental place nearby & went to ask them how much it was to hire some sticks. The girl who served us was very nice and basically gave us the sticks for a donation.
We got on the train and proceed to Gornergrat which is 3,089 metres above sea level. It was very very cold up there! Around -15 with the wind chill factor. It also started to snow. There is a hotel & restaurant there and so we had some soup to warm us up.

We then got back on the train to go one stop down. We got off at the train station up couldn’t see the igloo anywhere. We wondered around for a good 20mins because of course there was no-one there to ask questions of or any signs whatsoever. And they wonder why people get lost in the bloody snow! I mean seriously a sign would have been helpful!
Peter finally saw the igloo and we proceeded down a snowy, icy sort of track. Luckily we did have the sticks otherwise it would have been a bit perilous! As it was I was in the lead and slipped on some ice and ended up sliding down the slope on my bum! Luckily I was wearing ski pants!
Everyone else thought that was a great idea so they all slide down the slope on their bottoms as well. Let me say we were totally exhausted by the time we got to the igloo! And we were late as they had a set time for the fondue lunch. But the lady had to give us the cheese fondue lunch as we had already paid for it.
It was still very cold in the igloo and most of the igloo was actually a hotel! Not my cup of tea but I’m sure some people would enjoy it! I couldn’t stand the smell of the cheese, it was making me feel sick so I didn’t eat any, but Silvia, John & Peter did & they enjoyed it.
The lady then gave us a tour of the igloo hotel with the beautiful carvings in the ice. Apparently they build it from scratch every year.
We then had to walk back up the slope to the train station. It was hard work & I was very tired as I hadn’t slept very well the night before. I was cursing Peter the whole way as it was extremely cold and my hands were in extreme pain even though I had gloves on. We started walking next to the train tracks and got shouted at by the guard but I didn’t care as we were walking in snow up to our knees! Let me say the sticks came in handy!
Once we got to the train station I was straight into the bathroom to put my hands under the hot dryer. Heaven!
We then caught the train back to Zermatt. Silvia then cooked another lovely dinner.
