Day 23 – Paris to Zermatt, Switzerland

January 6, 2017January 17, 2017 By admin

Today we would spend the day travelling to Zermatt.

We had to be at Gare du Lyon train station by 7:30am to catch our train.

We were having an early breakfast when I checked my handbag & couldn’t find mine & Peter’s passports!

A frantic search of our luggage ensued and luckily, eventually we found them tucked away in a plastic bag! Thank god for that! Peter thought that they were stolen as we had to go through our luggage quite a number of times before we found them.

We then had limited time to get to the train station but we were catching a taxi as everyone was still sick and so we got there in time.

We then got the train from Paris to Lausanne, then from Lausanne to Visp, then Visp to Zermatt. This getting on & off the trains with luggage is very tiring and then if they don’t have a proper luggage rack you have to lift the luggage over your head to the racks above. Luckily we had two strong men to achieve this! Considering the suitcases each weighed about 23kgs I didn’t envy them!

The scenery from Visp to Zermatt was very beautiful. Past snow covered hills/mountains and very deep gorges.

We arrived in Zermatt in the late afternoon and had to figure out how to get to our hotel. They don’t have cars in Zermatt but they have little electric eTaxis. We paid for a taxi to our hotel as we had all the luggage.

The hotel was great and we each had an apartment. Which turned out to be convenient as the food in a restaurant in Zermatt is extremely expensive! Peter, Silvia & John chuffed off to the supermarket while I laid down for a while as I still wasn’t feeling well at all.

Our hotel had a wonderful view of the Matterhorn. And it was very cold, about -7 degrees.

Silvia cooked a wonderful dinner and then we all went to bed early. Problem, the rooms were overheated and the doonas way too thick. Consequently I think I got about an hours sleep the first night in Zermatt.
